It's as simple as that.

When it comes to accessorizing bookshelves and built in bookcases it's easy to get overwhelmed by open space. Just remember, by mixing old with new you bring a well cultured look that is chic and timeless. When it comes to the items you chose carefully select things that represent your taste and interest, this display should be functional as well as beautiful. Start by gathering your favorite architecture/design/fashion books- they make great props and will be easy to grab when you want to reference them, then focus on the smaller things (see my list below) and remember less is more! Lastly, make sure to focus on grouping things together so that clutter is avoided.

BEACH ART

Beach art doesn't have to mean wave photography or scenes of sand dunes at sunset, it can be so many other things. Personally, a more modern take on art is always my go to. I love these black framed fish swimming in both directions on the wall. While keeping these photos neutral in color and exactly the same size it's a fresh and clean approach on beach art.  These photos give the illusion of movement and the dark frames add strong lines to the space. Also, a more dramatic effect was created with how high these pieces are hung. More coastal art to come as I find inspiration..

FISHING FLOATS

Japanese glass fishing floats

When living in Hawaii nautical themed accessories become second nature. Full of mystery and stories of the sea, Japanese fishing floats are a one of a kind piece perfect for giving off a nautical flair. They can be found in an array of serene blue and green tones. As you can see they are most often used for accessorizing and accomplishing an effortless coastal inspired look. Whether on display on the coffee table, strategically hung up to catch your eye, or just nestled together on the floor they are a unique touch that strike up interest. You can find them reproduced with machine made 'character' but the ones that are worth your eye are the vintage floats. Here in Hawaii you can find them hidden in local antique stores maybe with a film of dust on them but rich in history and beauty scars from the ocean. Most times when I run across these fishing floats all I think about is if it could talk and tell tales it's travels in the Pacific waters...

MAGNIFICENT MONSTERA

If you know me well then you know it's no secret I have a love affair with monstera leaves. Ever since arriving on island I've fallen madly in love with this plant and it's foliage. It's enormous size and perfectly coastal vibe is what gets me the most. I feel as though I'm walking through a rain forrest every time I see one. This creeping vine is native to tropical rainforests of southern Mexico, hints why I would experience this rainforest illusion. They are magical beauties with plentiful posh punch. Adding any kind of live foliage to a room instantly gives it life. Easily transform a dull space into an inviting oasis with a quick drop of monstera leaves or palms to a vase. Whether they are draped on a table cloth or nestled together in a formal arrangement for an event monsteras tell a story of nature and it's wonders. I resemble a small child while watching our monstera plant grow in our backyard here in Hawaii. I swear I count each new leaf as it comes in! Cannot wait to add my very own monsteras to our home..

I love a small space packed with big style, all of the above are a great example of that. It's important that even the smallest nook of a room should hold it's own.
